Light in the palm, firm to the touch. A ridged exterior, textured with films of sediment, whorls unfurling out of the knob knotted at one end, tiny holes perforated along the perimeter where air was once taken in. Turned over, smooth and muscled, iridescent with blue, green, silvered flashes. Scooped like a dish, scalloped at its edges, a history of water ossified into the size and shape of an ear. No tricks of light, no drainage points. How many sites of absence are left? How many will remain? The nearby path enshrined with weeds, a car parked on a highway shoulder. Sweat wiped along one’s forearm and a glance upward. The sky, sprawled between blinks of night. A bare shade of blue. Silent as a cobweb, so delicate that a breeze could break it.
